Marian devotee Torres-Gomez gives nod to death penalty
Leyte 4th district Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez’s Marian devotion was no match for her loyalty to House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
The beautiful lady politiko was among the 217 who favored the death penalty restoration bill’s passage on third and final reading Tuesday, March 7.
Torres-Gomez cast a “yes” vote despite her being a devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Formerly with the Liberal Party (LP), Gomez jumped ship to PDP-Laban following the May 2016 elections.
Alvarez, PDP-Laban’s secretary-general, earlier vowed to replace House leaders who refuse to support the return of capital punishment in the country. It just so happens that Torres-Gomez heads the House Tourism Committee.
Torres-Gomez, who inaugurated a Marian exhibit in her native Ormoc in May 2010, can rest assured that she’ll keep her plum post.
