Nilangaw! Flies infest 14 barangays in Davao
Flies have infested at least 14 barangays in Davao City, and piggeries and poultry farms in the area may be to blame, councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte said on Wednesday.
Citing data from the City Health Office, Villafuerte said there was an increase of house flies population in nine barangays in Calinan and five in Tugbok district.
“We have been accustomed to the increase of fly population but meeting with barangay officials during the holidays made me realize this was not an isolated problem anymore,” she said.
She said the CHO traced this infestation to the 30 poultry farms and three piggeries in the area, Davao Today reported.
The CHO sanitary department of CHO and Department of Health are planning a consultative meeting with poultry and piggery farm owners on January 16, the report said.
Villafuerte said that when she visited Calinan and Tugbok, she saw house flies inside restaurants and around shopping and parking areas, and even on sidewalks.
She said this infestation could threaten public health and cause diarrhea, skin and eye infections.
