Sueno asks for status quo on Negros Island Region

An executive order abolishing the Negros Island Region has been drafted, but Interior Secretary Ismael Sueno said he has asked Malacañang to put its approval on hold for now.

Sueno told Bacolod-based news site Visayan Daily Star they are preparing a presentation on why the NIR should be retained.

He said the National Economic and Development Authority and other departments are preparing the presentation for the retention of the NIR before the Cabinet

Also, he said he believes most of the Cabinet members support the NIR retention, including NEDA head Ernesto Pernia.

The NIR covers Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. It was created via Executive Order No. 183 issued by then President Benigno Aquino III on May 29, 2015.
