Duterte calling Robredo ‘ma’am’ shows he’s a true gentleman – PDP-Laban exec

President Rodrigo Duterte’s very respectful manner in offering a Cabinet post to Vice President Leni Robredo proves that he is a “real gentleman”.

Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) Secretary-General for the Negros Island Region Yves Akol described Duterte in such manner Saturday (July 9) in a Sun Star report.

Akol reached this conclusion with the way that Duterte repeatedly addressed Robredo as “ma’am” during their phone conversation over the weekend wherein the president offered her the chairmanship of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).

“He knows how to read subtle messages and he knows where an appointee can serve her advocacy, by giving her the HUDCC,” Akol said.

Duterte is national chairman of PDP-Laban, while Robredo is from erstwhile ruling faction the Liberal Party (LP).

For those who missed it, this is what Duterte told the Vice President:

“Ma’am Leni, good afternoon. I’m here in the office now. I’m being asked by Rocky Ignacio of the Malacañang Press if I am giving you a Cabinet post. That’s her question.

“Can I answer her (referring to Rocky—RT)? I’m a bit bashful, ma’am.

“The whole Cabinet is listening. You know, ma’am, I called you so questions to me about you joining the Cabinet will stop.

“Oh, please don’t be apologetic, but I’ve long wanted to…Can you be the housing czar, ma’am? Can you be the housing secretary, ma’am?

“Oh, so you’re accepting it, ma’am? No need, ma’am, just get them. The executive secretary will hand you the appointment (papers).

So, you’re accepting the offer, ma’am? Okay, ma’am, so that will be in time for the next Cabinet meeting and even on security matters so you will be updated on what’s happening in our country. That’s for you to know.”
